Discover: Root Nativo

Club sounds infused with Afro-Latino history.

If you’ve followed the UK club scene closely of late, CXLI may be familiar to you. The London-based brothers and DJ duo have been lighting up the scene with their international approach to music, leaving no stone unturned in their sets as they spin music of all kinds.

As curators of the Bundarica club night, they’ve had plenty of practice testing their exciting approach. On Root Nativo, now available on Keakie, CXLI explores the confines of their Colombian heritage and Afro-inspired club sounds from around the globe, with an undertone of the UK underground. Expect an eclectic blend of Reggaeton, Afrobeats, Dembow, Amapiano, Baile Funk, UK Funky and more vibrations to get your leg shaking.

We spoke to the brothers about the show and merging their culture with club music.

We have always been championing Afro and Latin sounds, and with Root Nativo, we aim to create the soundtrack to a sonic journey through our minds.
— CXLI

What is the premise of Root Nativo?

CXLI: Being of Afro-Latino descent, we wanted to merge cultures within our show, much like it has been in our heritage. We have always been championing Afro and Latin sounds, and with Root Nativo, we aim to create the soundtrack to a sonic journey through our minds. Most artists either just focus on Latin or Afro sounds separately, therefore focussing on combining the two in our signature style results in a special Keakie show for our listeners.

How did the idea of the show come about?

CXLI: We have always had an idea in our heads of what our own show may look like, from the music down to the concept, so curating Root Nativo was in fact fairly straightforward.

What do you want listeners to take from Root Nativo?

CXLI: We want listeners coming away from our show thinking they've never heard a mix like this before. Mixing Amapiano with Latino vocals, our own productions over Afro vocals, these are ideas unique to our show and simply want our listening audience to take us in accordingly. We've put hard work into our craft and believe listeners can take this away from our content.
