5 Bass DJs You Need To Know Immediately

The selectors, producers and label heads pushing Bass music forward in 2022.

At its very core, Bass music is the foundation of many a musical movement. From Drum & Bass and Jungle to Garage and Grime, Bass has reinvented itself in various thrilling ways for generations, constantly moving to its own beat. In 2022, it is just as relevant in dancefloors around the world as it’s always been and here are five DJs, selectors and producers pushing the boundaries of Bass music forward.

Peach Puff Bass Unit

Transmitting from Beirut, Lebanon, Peach Puff Bass Unit explore Bass music with no bounds and no intentions of pleasing the crowd. Consisting of a multitude of members, the DJs, producers and selectors go full on with their deepest desires of track selections, all while paying tribute to their favourite artists pushing boundaries across Jungle, Dubstep, Breakbeat, Electro and classic UK Garage. Active on platforms such as Boiler Room, their Peach Puff Podcast, available to stream now on Keakie, features mixes from residents and guests alike, leaving an air of unpredictability with every song they blend.

Gimme A Break Records

Leeds-based outfit Gimme A Break (GAB) is a new label pushing the best in new UKG and Breakbeat. Dropping records and mixes in the hope, in their own words, “to align the city’s electronic music with the rest of the country,” the label, headed up by DJs Saucebag and van roÿ, are quietly going about their business in showcasing Bass music in all its glory. Since its formation, GAB has released output by the likes of Donsurf, Introspekt, Nova Chek and Oldboy, tracks that can be found in their new series which alternates between mixes from the GAB residents and their favourite selectors from their home turf of West Yorkshire and further afield.

Just Geo

With an Instagram bio with the simple statement ‘really good at making people dance,’ Just Geo proves himself worthy of that distinction with every set he plays. The DJ and producer has had a musical mind for as long as he can remember, often hitting the keys of the keyboard in his childhood home, and has channelled this into a successful career spinning Bass, Garage and Grime. On top of this, he runs his own Down The Road label, launching the official showcase on Keakie, and has held down residencies at venues such as Tola, Boardmasters and Somerset House, while his productions have been supported by heavyweights such as SBTRKT, DJ Maximum, Boy Better Know, Alison Wonderland and Jamz Supernova. A sign that Just Geo is a force of his own.

Invicta Audio

Invicta Audio is one of Bristol's hottest young Drum & Bass labels, fostering the youngest talent in the industry and gaining distinction as a label to watch. Formed in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic by Lakota and Viatic, it has quickly shot to the top of all things D&B, releasing singles and projects capturing the energy of the new generation of artists. On top of that, Invicta has built a reputation in a short time of curating shows with incredible turnouts and received universal acclaim, including finishing in second place in DNB Arena’s ‘Best Newcomer Label’ and a nomination for DJ Mag’s ‘Best Compilation’ award at their 2021 ceremony. Their Invicta Rewind show, available on Keakie, is the next step taken in showcasing their budding talents to the world.

Avalanche

Hailing from Fukuoka in the south of Japan, Avalanche is a collective specialising in Bass-driven genres. They have been holding Grime parties in their hometown since 2018, inviting the likes of Conducta, Akito, and Damndef to spin with them and building in momentum by sharpening their DJ chops. The first episode of their new Keakie show showcases some uncompromising Grime, bouncy Dubstep and distinct blends of the UK-originated sounds they know and love.
