Discover: Pure Escape

When Electronic music meets science fiction.

As electronic music continues to expand, artists from far and wide are injecting their own imagination into a myriad of sounds that continue to evolve. Interpretation is key and with it, new and thrilling musical forms take shape.

Combining electronic music with a fascination for all things Horror and Sci-Fi, Pure Escape is just that, a retreat to a world in which Techno, Ambient and House meet with other sonic oddities for a musical journey through the cosmos. The mix show, now available on Keakie, is the work of SHE Spells Doom, a Zambia-based musician active since 2013 and releasing funky club music with an experimental slant. His hazy but at times rampant style tends to create a visceral atmosphere without forsaking the dancefloor.

We spoke to SHE Spells Doom about the new series and exploring his love of horror films through music.

I’ve always wanted to have room to play weirder stuff alongside functional club tunes.
— SHE Spells Doom

What is the premise of Pure Escape?

SSD: The premise of Pure Escape is me mixing about 60 minutes of music that reflects my love for sonic oddities - mostly informed by my love of 80s/90s Sci-Fi and Horror films.

How did the idea of the show come about?

SSD: I’ve always wanted to have room to play weirder stuff alongside functional club tunes. Joining Keakie presented me with a  chance to finally explore this.

What do you want listeners to take from Pure Escape?

SSD: I’d want listeners to take two things from the show:

1. The view that the show is a road map of how I arrive at the sound of the music I make as SHE Spells Doom.

2. For listeners to hopefully see that the limits of genre are now more blurred than ever, given the fact the majority of us are using the same tools (DAWs, sample packs) to make music across them.

When is the ideal time for listeners to check out the show?

SSD: The ideal time to listen would be while you’re fixing your dinner - round the kitchen, chopping your veggies and all that.  Before heading for a night out would be good too.

What's your favourite Keakie show that isn't yours?

SSD: CXLI’s Root Nativo. I really enjoyed their first episode - excited to catch the next one when it drops.

Describe Pure Escape in three words.

SSD: Mind-bending, hazy and sexy.
